BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – The YMCA of Southeastern North Carolina will begin offering its Afterschool Care program and Southport and Jessie Mae Monroe elementary schools, according to an announcement Wednesday, July 17.

“The Y’s Afterschool Care program is available each day that school is in session. At the end of the school day, Brunswick County students at participating schools are released to the care of Y staff and stay on-site at their schools until pick-up, which ends at 6 p.m. The program offers a variety of activities that allow students to explore and develop their interests and talents, including sports, team building, outside play, group exercise, and more. Children are also offered a healthy snack and structured homework help,” the Y states.

According to the announcement, the program’s expansion comes as Brunswick County and the surrounding areas continually see and increase in population. The afterschool program is already offered at several schools in Brunswick, New Hanover, Pender and Sampson counties.

“Brunswick County Schools began partnering with the Y at the start of the 2023-2024 school year, offering Afterschool Care at Lincoln, Belville, Town Creek, and Union elementary schools. The Y will continue serving these schools, in addition to Southport and Jessie Mae Monroe elementary schools, during the 2024-2025 school year,” the release adds.

More information about the program can be found on the YMCA of Southeastern North Carolina website.
