WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, N.C. (WECT) – Wrightsville Beach Ocean Rescue Team members defended their title at the United States Lifesaving Associations, South Atlantic Regional Championship competition over this week.

The ORT for the past three years has earned first place in the contest, which is comprised of the best lifeguards from 18 agencies within the region

“I do not have the words that will enable me to express how proud I am of their achievement. This is a very remarkable accomplishment to say the least,” Ocean Rescue Director Dave Baker said. “Knowing that everyone is looking to take you down a notch, year after year as they too are gunning for 1st place, is a testament to the amount of training and dedication each team member had so they would be able to uphold the previous year’s performances. To the Board of Aldermen, The Town and the community of Wrightsville Beach, thank you for the support you have shown the program over all these years. We hope we have made you proud with the teams’ accomplishment.”

Those who qualified in their events will go on a trip to South Padre Island, Texas on August 7-9. They will compete against the best from all the US regions in the United States Lifesaving Association National Championships where ‘multiple Wrightsville Beach Ocean Rescue Lifeguards will be defending their individual 2023 National Championship titles and their 1st place finish in their division at this prestigious event.
