WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, N.C. (WECT) – Wrightsville Beach Police Chief David Squires was terminated from his position as of Wednesday, according to Mayor Darryl Mills.

According to Mayor Mills, the acting Town Manager, Tony Wilson, sat down with Squires on Wednesday and after a discussion, Wilson terminated Squires effective immediately. Mayor Mills did not specify what issues the two men had discussed.

Police Captain Jason Bishop will serve as the acting police chief until, ‘the acting town manager and the board (of aldermen) can decide what they plan to do to hire a new permanent police chief’, according to Mayor Mills.

When asked if he supported the acting town manager’s decision to terminate the chief, Mayor Mills said the board has been told not to comment.

Squires served as the head of the Wrightsville Beach Police Department since 2020, after serving 28 years in the Virginia Beach Police Department.
