‘She was an amazing person, with a big heart’: Family speaks out after boyfriend charged in murder of girlfriend in Columbus County

COLUMBUS COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – A man has been arrested for allegedly killing his girlfriend.

Frederick Smith, 71, was arrested for the murder of a woman on Oct. 27, according to the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO). The previous day, the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office stated a woman, Brandi Scott, had been shot by her boyfriend.

The sheriff’s office said the woman called 911 for herself after she was shot, but later died from her injuries at the hospital.

CCSO also said her boyfriend was in custody and charged with murder.

Scott’s family say they were shocked to hear the devastating news that Scott was gone.

“It’s a hard hit, because this was probably one of our biggest fears, losing a sibling,” said Madavia Johnson, Scott’s sister.

Scott was a mother first, a daughter, and a friend, but to Johnson and 10 other siblings, she was a sister.

“It was an honor to have her as a sister in this lifetime,” said Johnson. A lifetime Johnson says was cut too short after being tragically shot Saturday night on Elizabeth Street in Whiteville.

“There’s a lot of life left in us and for hers to be tragically taken so sudden, how it was, so it’s just kind of devastating,” said Johnson. “We have to live the rest of our lives without seeing her, talking to her, picking up the phone and calling her and she not being on the other end that hurts.”

Johnson says Brandi was a breath of fresh air and a shining light to anyone who knew her.

“She was strong, she was resilient. She had a strong personality. She was an amazing person, with a big heart, and she loved it. She loved people,” said Johnson.

Johnson is confident she’ll see her sister again.

“We will all be waiting on each other on the other side.”

And she’s confident justice will be served.

“Justice will be served. I’m confident that justice will be served. We put our we put our faith in the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office that justice will be served. It will be served,” said Johnson.
