WHITEVILLE, N.C. (WECT) – A woman has been charged after a fatal hit-and-run involving a member of a work crew.

According to First Sgt. Andrew Pait with North Carolina State Highway Patrol, troopers responded to Georgia Pacific Road near Midway Road on Nov. 13 at around 12:44 p.m.

A crew was doing work on nearby driveways on the main road just outside of Whiteville when a car ran off the road to the right.

It then side-swept a parked car and hit 39-year-old David Jackson of Bladenboro, who was standing beside a truck that had a light on top signaling that crews were there. He landed on the eastbound lane side in a ditch.

The car continued on Georgia Pacific Road. Troopers later found a 2005 GMC truck a short distance from the scene behind a home that had damage matching the hit-and-run.

The suspect was found a short time after within city limits.

Chloe Sagendorph, 27, of Whiteville was charged with DWI, felony death by vehicle, and felony hit-and-run.

The Whiteville Police Department and Columbus County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the search.
