WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The Wilmington Symphony Orchestra (WSO) has named its new music director and conductor.
Peter Askim will take over as the WSO Music Director and Conductor on June 1 and lead the season-opening concert on Sept. 20 at Cape Fear Community College’s Wilson Center.
According to WSO, Askim is a Maine native and active composer, conductor, and collaborative connector. He has connections in Raleigh and through North Carolina Artists.
Askim currently serves as the Artistic Director of The Next Festival of Emerging Artists, Conductor of the Raleigh Civic Symphony and Chamber Orchestra, and Director of Orchestral Activities at NC State University.
The Search Committee chair Jane Birnbach says they received over 90 letters of interest for the position.
“The level of candidates was a testament to the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra and our community at large. It was a difficult process with so many qualified applicants, but we were able to narrow the search to four finalists and are happy to have chosen Dr. Askim to take us through our next chapter of excellence,” Birnbach said.
Askim says Wilmington has a special place in his heart.
“I am inspired by the incredible musicians, staff, and audience members I have met so far. To a person, they have been so warm, generous, and welcoming,” Askim said. “I cannot wait to dive into this unique community and help co-create the Wilmington Symphony’s exciting next chapter. So MANY possibilities – let’s go!”
