WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The trial of two men charged in a 2021 double murder continued with testimony focused on digital evidence from the defendants’ phones.
Omonte Bell and Dyrell Green face murder charges in connection with two deaths at the home of a former executive of Tru Colors Brewing.
The first witness called was an expert in cell-site and location data analysis. The evidence introduced examined the locations of both Bell’s and Green’s phones, as well as their call logs leading up to the shooting. The defense questioned why call logs for other people who previously lived in the house were not brought into evidence.
The second half of the day was spent arguing the basis for certain evidence to be introduced to the jury. The jury was not present in the courtroom during this portion of the proceedings.
The defense had doubts about one of the state’s witnesses, who was to be called as an expert in digital forensics. The defense questioned the reliability of the witness’s report and their methodology in creating it.
Without the jury in the courtroom, the state and defense had the opportunity to individually question the witness. The witness would testify to the defendants’ phone text messages, internet searches, location data and contacts linking the two to the killings.
The defense questioned the relevance of many texts in the report and a bias to include certain texts and not others. The state offered to redact certain texts, but not all.
The witness was tendered as an expert. More testimony is expected to be heard on Wednesday at 9:15 a.m.
