WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – Wilmington City Council on Tuesday, Aug. 6, approved a proposed grant application, rezoning for new apartments and more.
Application to the New Hanover Community Endowment
Councilmembers approved a resolution to apply to the endowment for $2.75 million. The funding would be used for a three-year workforce housing voucher program for city officers.
“This program would include two (2) cohorts of fifty (50) officers for up to 18 months each. The initial period of January – December 2025 would consist of a $1,200 per month rental voucher, increasing to an amount of $1,320 per month from January to June 2026 due to inflation. The second cohort would run from July – December 2026 consisting of $1,320 per month rental voucher, increasing to $1,452 per month from January – December 2027 for inflation,” the agenda item states.
The proposal argues that the program could help the Wilmington Police Department recruit new officers and retain existing ones.
Rezoning proposal for a 60-unit townhome complex
One developer’s request was approved to get 10.27 acres at 120 Switchyard Road rezoned from a legacy multi-family district [MF-MH (L)(CD)] to a medium-density multiple-dwelling residential district (Conditional District) [MD-10(CD)].
The proposal includes 14 townhome buildings with a total of 60 units between them.
During the planning commission’s discussion of the development on July 10, one person spoke in favor and nobody spoke against it. The commission voted 4-1 to recommend conditional approval.
