WHITEVILLE, N.C. (WECT) – For Caleb McAllister, playing the trumpet has become second nature.

Caleb has Asperger’s, a disorder on the Autism spectrum that can make communication difficult. His mom Matresse says music has become a language of his own.

“It’s become his sound. It’s become his communication to the world,” McAllister said.

Last time WECT spoke with Caleb, he was an eighth grader playing the trumpet and directing the band at Whiteville High.

Five years later, he’s graduating with honors from Whiteville High and still playing the trumpet, but this time, for a much larger crowd. Caleb played the National Anthem for the graduation ceremony.

“It is the best instrument ever,” Caleb said.

His mom says he’s come a long way since he first started playing in sixth grade.

“I can hear a tune on TV, and then a few moments later, he comes in with the rhythm or the melody with his trumpet,” McAllister said.

She hopes her son can be an inspiration to other parents who have kids with special needs.

“Even though your child may have a diagnosis and it’s something that you don’t understand, don’t give up. Still continue to push and persevere and let them just be their authentic selves,” McAllister said.

Caleb is enrolled at Southeastern Community College and plans to continue music lessons so he can achieve his ultimate dream of becoming an orchestra conductor.
