MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) – A video sent to WMBF News early Friday showed crews responding to a fire on the dunes in Myrtle Beach.
WMBF News was told the video was taken on 75th Avenue North near the North Shore Resort.
Lindsey Cox who witnessed the fire said it was like looking out into a sea of red.
“My mom came running and she’s like, ‘The beach is on fire, the beach is on fire.’ We come outside and just like, red. It spread so fast,” Cox described.
She said not only could the fire be seen, but it could be felt by those who witnessed it first-hand.
“You could feel the heat, and you could feel the ash hitting you where you were sitting,” Cox said.
The Myrtle Beach Fire Department is still investigating what may have caused the dunes to catch fire. Some beachgoers told WMBF News they believe it could have been a firework based on what they witnessed Thursday night into early Friday morning.
“Literally hundreds of people lighting fireworks, so you don’t know who did it. It’s like D-Day down there with all the fireworks going off,” beachgoer Steve Nowak recalled.
The city of Myrtle Beach doesn’t allow fireworks on any of its beaches or public areas. But one local said that rule doesn’t really mean much if police aren’t going to enforce it.
“I’ve never seen any police action taken, and fireworks are going off all year long,” resident Robin Fox said.
