WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – People in the Wilmington community are organizing a vigil to stand in solidarity with the family of Sonya Massey on Friday, July 26, at 6:30 p.m.
People will be gathering at the 1898 Monument at 1018 N. 3rd Street in Wilmington.
Deputies responded to Massey’s home after she called 911 to report a suspected prowler at around 1 a.m. on July 6. Prior to the shooting, Massey ducked and apologized to now-former deputy Sean Grayson and the other deputy. Body cam footage shows that Grayson discouraged his partner from grabbing a medical kit to save her.
Grayson was indicted on the charges of first degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and official misconduct.
