CLEMSON, S.C. (WBTV) – Disaster was narrowly avoided after an apparent fireworks mishap sent sparks flying into the stands during the Carolina Panthers’ annual Fan Fest on Thursday night.
Video showed fireworks shooting off from the top of Clemson University’s Memorial Stadium before one appeared to fly downward, sending a shower of sparks through several rows of bleachers and over the heads of fans.
In the video, remnants of the firework nearly hit a group of three people, causing one fan to jump two rows down. Nobody appeared to have been in the direct path. A Panthers spokesperson said nobody was hurt, but EMTs were on site.
The Panthers made their return to the state of South Carolina after moving training camp this year, going from Wofford College to the team’s facility on the edge of uptown Charlotte.
The trip back to Clemson was billed as a return to the franchise’s roots after having played its home games at the university during its inaugural season in 1995. The following year, the Panthers moved into Ericsson Stadium, which has since been renamed Bank of America Stadium.
Fan Fest came a week before the Panthers open preseason action against the New England Patriots in what will be the first glimpse of in-game action for rookie head coach Dave Canales and company.
