GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) – Georgetown County officials are working to confirm the identity of the human remains that were found inside a vehicle that was submerged in a river.

A dive team from Columbia was diving in the area of Browns Ferry Landing on Black River Monday after they received information about a Mount Pleasant man who went missing in 2015, Georgetown County Coroner Chase Ridgeway said.

According to the dive team’s information, the man’s cell phone last pinged near the landing.

Ridgeway said the team found a vehicle registered to the missing man with human remains inside during the dive.

“The remains were collected and proper identification will hopefully be determined through dental records in the coming days,” the coroner said in a post on social media.

The Georgetown County Coroner’s Office has not yet confirmed the identity of the remains.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
