WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The UNCW Board of Trustees is set to discuss the 2024 Campus Master Plan and discuss on-campus housing, among other items, on Thursday, Aug. 1.

Executive Director of Housing and Residence Life Dr. Kevin Meaney will provide an update regarding move-in, current occupancy numbers, and overflow housing during the Educational Planning and Programs Committee meeting.

“A campus-wide work group was formed to analyze and reevaluate move-in procedures. Feedback and suggested improvements have been implemented for the Fall 2024 move-in, specifically regarding efforts to reduce traffic congestion. Additionally, occupancy numbers and overflow housing plans will be reviewed, as the occupancy rate has increased 1.5% from Fall 2023 (as of July 8),” the Educational Planning and Programs Committee meeting materials state.

Changes to move-in day include two locations for check-in, the use of UNCW Mobile to provide families and students with up-to-date resources, as well as specific routes and arrival times to prevent congestion.

The presentation also sheds light on the high interest in on-campus housing. UNCW has 5,230 on-campus beds, but as of July 15, there are contracts for 5,424. Over 170 students have been assigned to new spaces, where TV lounges and study rooms have been converted into living spaces. Triples are also being used as quads to accommodate more room for beds.

During a UNCW Business Affairs Committee meeting, a vote will be held for the 2024 Campus Master Plan. Building projects include upgrades to Chancellor’s Walk and the Bluethenthal Wildflower Preserve, as well as a welcome center, expansion for Kenan Auditorium, and a residence hall where Galloway Hall once stood. The master plan also includes arena renovations for Basketball/Volleyball practice at Trask Coliseum and a hotel & conference center on the campus. Another notable project is an arena expansion next to Trask.
