WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The University of North Carolina Wilmington has shared details regarding plans to demolish Galloway Hall.
The demolition is set to start sometime this week in July.
The overflow parking near the facility on Riegel Road is closed until August 30 due to the high amount of construction traffic.
The university says the hall is no longer used and is beyond its serviceable life.
“This Demolition Plan applies to all physical abatement, demolition, and waste-generating activities performed as a part of the remediation and demolition activities of the project. The project will include an environmental assessment, removal of any hazardous materials, the demolition, removal and disposal of the building and associated utilities, foundations, slabs, as well as the demolition, removal, and disposal of site improvements,” the UNCW website states.
The hall was built in 1970 and opened in 1971 as a co-ed dorm with 400 beds and is sometimes claimed to have been one of the first air-conditioned dorms in the UNC system. It cost $1.475 million to build and was named for Edmond R. Galloway who died in a bicycle accident as a freshman on Oct. 11, 1974.
