‘Try not to let alcohol ruin the day’: Officials encourage people to practice safe boating ahead of Fourth of July

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – Thousands of people head to the water to enjoy the Fourth of July weekend, but officials want people to remember that safety should always come first.

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office wants boaters to know that law enforcement agencies will have an increased presence during the holiday. Lt. Jerry Brewer says deputies will be at Masonboro Island and Palm Tree Island.

“It’s the Fourth of July so you know a lot of people are out on the water. Be safe, try not to let alcohol ruin the day,” said Lt. Brewer.

He says during the Fourth of July weekend, the sheriff’s office will likely see an increased number of calls for intoxicated boaters. Lt. Brewer says the sheriff’s office will use a multi-agency response to keep up with the high number of people.

“Boats hitting each other, cutting anchor lines things like that. Which you know intoxicated people with them, that can be a big issue and that’s why we’re out here. We are out here to help and unfortunately, that help is needed a lot,” said Lt. Brewer.

Lt. Brewer says people can check out the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission website for a full boater checklist.

“We want you to go out and have fun just be responsible too,” he added.
