WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – With more flight options, a record number of people are expected to pass through the Wilmington International Airport during the Labor Day Weekend.
“This Labor Day is going to be the busiest we’ve ever had at ILM, we have more non-stops than ever before,” said Jeff Bourk, airport director at ILM.
He recommends people get to the airport at least an hour and a half before their flight is scheduled to take off.
“I travel all the time, one of the things I try to do is right before I leave my house I get on my phone check my time, and make sure it’s still on time. If it’s delayed I can adjust my time to make sure I stay at home and relax there instead of coming in here early and waiting,” said Bourk.
Bourk says more employees will be working throughout the weekend to help with the extra crowds, however, the rush is not something airport officials are unfamiliar with.
He says the airport saw several peaks in crowds earlier in the summer and he expects the Labor Day weekend to look no different.
The old Airport Boulevard leaving the airport is now closed, this road leaves the airport and connects back to the terminal entrance.
Crews opened up a new road on Aug. 30, known as the new Airport Boulevard. The road goes behind the F parking lot, and this is the route drivers now must take to leave. The old Airport Boulevard area will be turned into additional parking.
