Tech Talk: Protecting your phone while out and about this summer

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – With summer in full swing and the Fourth of July right around the corner, more and more people are spending time outdoors.

Jessica Holt, with UScellular, spoke with WECT about tips and tricks to protect your phone from the elements while out and about.

Like people, cell phones can overheat when exposed to high temperatures for an extended period of time. If your phone overheats, the best thing to do is to take it inside.

“… keep it inside in cool weather [and] let it turn back on automatically. Make sure your software is up to date so your phone is not working overtime. Don’t be playing games, watching movies when you’re outside. Just enjoy the outdoors,” Holt said.

To escape the heat, you may want take a dip in the pool or wade into the ocean, but make sure you don’t bring your phone into the water with you.

“So you want to do everything you can to protect your phone from [getting wet], you know, put it in a case, I have a case here that actually is waterproof and it floats in water too. Make sure that you have all of your information backed up on the off chance that your phone does get water damage and does not turn back on,” Holt explains.

If your phone does get wet, the best thing to do in Holt’s opinion is to be patient and let it dry.
