RALEIGH, N.C. (WECT) – Attorney General Josh Stein announced on June 21 that the State Crime Lab uploaded 2,674 DNA samples into the CODIS (Combined DNA Index System) in April and May.
Per Stein’s office, there were 122 CODIS hits, including 14 forensic, 69 convicted offenders and 39 arrestees. The most common hits were for sex offenses at 61, then property offenses at 43 and homicides at 11.
“Scientists at the State Crime Lab are working daily to use science to keep us safe,” said Stein. “When we analyze and test evidence, we make our communities safer and help law enforcement get criminals off the streets.”
The backlog of older sexual assault kits in North Carolina ended earlier this year.
