Wilson Center to offer drive-in concerts this week

June 11, 2020 By WECT

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The Wilson Center and the Cape Fear Community College Foundation have announced a series of drive-in concerts.

The concerts will be held in the surface parking lot behind the Wilson Center between Front and Second Streets.

Shane Fernando, Vice President of Advancement and the Arts at CFCC, said it’s an opportunity to bring the community together safely in the time of COVID-19.

“With performing arts centers in particular, our mission is to bring the community together and that mission has been very difficult to meet as of late so this allows us to safely and within the confines of the governor’s order to be together safely and support our regional musicians,” Fernando said. “At the same time, one of the concerts will be dedicated to support scholarships. With so many people who are hurting in this economy, people are looking for new opportunities to develop skills. As we begin to take care of these students this fall, we know that they need for the scholarships is going to be so much more.”

Fernando said, at the same time, the fundraiser that supports the scholarship had to be called off due to COVID-19.

The Gift of Education fundraiser did not happen as planned in May.

However, Saturday’s drive-in concert, featuring Uptown Easy, will benefit the scholarship program.

“One of our CFCC merit scholarships recipients will be joining the band and do a song and also tell her story and there will be other students weaving their stories into the performance as well,” he said. “So, it’s a wonderful way to showcase our students and to help people attain their education and have a great night listening to music.”

Scheduled to perform are:

June 25, 7:30 p.m.: Travis Shallow (Americana)

June 26, 7:30 p.m.: Flashback (Classic Rock)

June 27, 7:30 p.m.: Uptown Easy (Soul) Benefitting Student Scholarships

June 28, 4:30 p.m.: Massive Grass (Alternative Bluegrass)

These are ticketed events, and capacity for each performance is limited. Tickets must be bought in advance. No walk-up tickets will be available.

Tickets will be $40 per car, plus taxes and fees. A package which includes a ticket and “a specially crafted snack platter” also will be available.

“These events will be held in compliance with local and state health guidelines and will be in-car events. There will be limited amplified sound and the concert will be broadcast via short-range FM radio transmission. In order to enjoy the concert experience, it is recommended that ticket purchasers arrive in a vehicle equipped with a tunable FM receiver,” organizers said in a news release.
