Southport postpones downtown tree lighting ceremony to Sunday

SOUTHPORT, N.C. (WECT) – The city of Southport has postponed its initial downtown tree-lighting ceremony for Winterfest 2025 to this weekend, according to city officials.

The celebration will be held on Sunday, Dec. 7, at 6 p.m. at Whittler’s Bench.

The event was originally scheduled for Friday, Dec. 5, but was postponed due to inclement weather.

Participants can watch as the mayor lights the city’s Christmas tree, officially welcoming the season.

“Guests will enjoy holiday music performed by the Trinity United Methodist Church Children’s Choir, while sipping hot chocolate and enjoying cookies provided by the Southport Beautification Committee. Families, residents, and visitors of all ages are invited to share in this festive celebration,” city officials wrote in a press release.
