Sheriff’s office warns of scam targeting teachers in Brunswick County

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – Teachers in Brunswick County are asked to be on the lookout for a scam involving people posing as law enforcement officers asking for personal information or money, according to the county sheriff’s office.

“Remember: The sheriff’s office will never contact you by phone or by other means demanding immediate payment or personal information!” the BCSO states. “Even if the call appears to come from the sheriff’s office or the caller identifies himself as a BCSO deputy, this is a scam!”

Residents are asked to hang up if they receive a call or other correspondence like this. The scammer may threaten that you will be arrested if you do not provide personal information or money.

“If you receive such a call (the calls have come from (910)-377-6193), do not provide any information or send any money. Instead, hang up and contact the Sheriff’s Office directly at (910)-253-2777 to verify the authenticity of the call,” Brunswick County Schools states. “We urge all staff members to be vigilant and to report any suspicious phone calls to the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office. Protecting your personal information is paramount, and we are here to help if you need assistance or have concerns.”
