COLUMBUS COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – Several incidents involving rocks being thrown at cars traveling in Columbus County led to the arrests of two people, according to the county sheriff’s office.
Per the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded on Friday, July 19, to W Strawberry Street in Chadbourn. The victim told deputies that while driving south on Joe Brown Hwy, a northbound vehicle threw a rock through their windshield.
“The victim provided dash cam footage showing a small dark-colored passenger car, though the footage did not clearly identify the vehicle or suspect,” the incident report states.
Two days later, deputies responded to two more incidents involving similar rocks on Haynes Lennon Hwy and Andrew Jackson Hwy SW near Cerro Gordo.
During the investigation, a vehicle matching the suspect description was pulled over.
“Inside the vehicle, large rocks were discovered, matching the type used in the property damage,” the report explains.
The two occupants, a 17-year-old and 24-year-old Cameron Austin Rockwell of Whiteville, initially denied throwing rocks, but the minor later admitted that they committed the acts.
The sheriff’s office has sought juvenile petitions against the 17-year-old for four counts of assault with a deadly weapon and two counts of injury to personal property.
Rockwell was charged with four counts of assault with a deadly weapon and two counts of injury to personal property. He received a $150,000 unsecured bond.
