COLUMBUS COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office says a man was arrested after leading law enforcement on a three-county chase in a stolen vehicle Thursday, Feb. 1.

Per the CCSO, its deputies were asked by the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office to help with an SUV they were pursuing along with the Scotland County Sheriff’s Office.

The RCSO said that a man stole an SUV at gunpoint in Scotland County and drove it through Robeson County toward Columbus County on U.S. 74.

The SCSO began the chase and was later joined by RCSO deputies, who tried to stop the car with stop sticks and eventually took over the chase.

Then in Columbus County, the CCSO says its deputies tried again to use stop sticks to stop the SUV but it didn’t work.

“After chasing the suspect for several miles through the Evergreen and Boardman communities of Columbus County, the chase ended on the newly constructed overpass on Old Boardman Road at U.S. Highway 74,” a CCSO announcement states.

Bryan Gunter from Leesville, S.C., was arrested. Officials say he was wanted on multiple fugitive warrants from Columbia, SC. He was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital for evaluation because police believed he may have been impaired.

Gunter was charged by the CCSO with:

  • Flee to Elude Arrest
  • Fail to Stop For Stopped School Bus
  • Failure to Stop for A Duly Erected Stop Sign
  • Careless and Reckless Driving, Aggressive Driving
  • Failure to Maintain Lane Control
  • Driving Left of Center
  • Exceeding Posted Speed Limit
  • Failure to Wear Seatbelt
  • Traveling the Wrong Way on a Divided Highway
  • Driving While License Revoked.

The N.C. State Highway Patrol charged Gunter with a DWI, and the RCSO and SCSO also plan to seek charges.
