WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – “Do you like scary movies?” the voice on the phone asks Drew Barrymore’s character near the beginning of Scream.

While Wes Craven’s 1997 horror classic wasn’t filmed in North Carolina, the fifth installment in the franchise, also titled Scream, was shot in the Cape Fear area with prominent scenes taking place in and around Wilmington.

“What’s your favorite scary movie?” Ghostface would later ask Barrymore in the opening sequence. But with local households finishing preparations for Halloween festivities, and yes, that franchise has also visited the Port City, perhaps we should be asking what your favorite locally-shot scary movie is.

Here are some of the most popular horror flicks to shoot scenes in the Cape Fear area:

  • Halloween Kills (2021)
  • The Conjuring (2013)
  • Scream (2022)
  • The Crow (1994)
  • The Black Phone (2021)
  • I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)
  • Firestarter (1984)
  • Evil Dead II (1987)
  • Maximum Overdrive (1986)
  • Cat’s Eye (1985)
  • Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever (2009)
  • The Exorcism (2024)
  • Silver Bullet (1985)

Southeastern NC has a rich history in film, and a full list of locally-shot films can be found here.

And if you’re ever grilled over the phone about horror movies, just remember that Jason’s mother, Mrs. Voorhees, is the killer in the first Friday the 13th.
