SURF CITY, N.C. (WECT) – U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Wilmington District is hoping to get citizen feedback on a report for the Surf City Coastal Storm Risk Management project.
The General Reevaluation Report and Environmental Assessment (GRR/EA) aims to reevaluate coastal storm damage and effects from sea level rise for long-term resilience over 5 years of analysis along the Surf City coastline. A tentative plan in the draft includes periodic beach and dune nourishment along about six miles of shoreline, with initial construction anticipated to need about 6 million cubic yards of sand placement.
Future maintenance cycles are estimated to need 1.2 million cubic yards of renourishment every six years.

There will also be a public information meeting with a Q&A and an opportunity to comment at the Surf City Municipal Center on Sept. 24 at 6 p.m. The center is located at 213 W. Florence Way, Hampstead, NC, 28433.
“Once the review period closes on October 4, 2024, the Corps will respond to comments received, and incorporate comments and responses into a final report. The team’s goal is to complete the study process with signing of a Chief of Engineers Report in May 2025,” a USACE announcement states.
