Police: Man accused of pointing gun at Wilmington traffic was not armed with a weapon

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – A portion of College Road near UNCW closed Thursday, July 18, after police received a report of a man pointing a gun at traffic, according to the Wilmington Police Department.

Per the WPD, officers responded to the 600 block of College Road at around 9:30 a.m.

The roadway was briefly shut down as officers took the suspect into custody.

In an update, the WPD announced that the suspect did not have gun.

“After officers secured the person in question and checked the immediate area out it was discovered that the person in question was not armed with a gun. The original 911 caller believed the cell phone looked like a gun as they drove by and described the actions of the person as ‘pointing a gun at cars driving by’. The person that was in custody has been released,” the WPD update states.
