Pharmacist discusses medications that should be included in a hurricane prep kit

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – With the Atlantic hurricane season underway, families and residents should ensure they’re prepared in case a storm were to strike southeastern North Carolina.

Joshua Jones, a Novant Health pharmacist, spoke with WECT about the medications one should include in their hurricane preparedness kit.

A full list of supplies to include and additional hurricane preparedness information can be found on the First Alert Weather Hurricane Center webpage.

“… you want to think about your daily medications that you take or people in your household take,” Jones said. “And also think about some of those over the counter medications that you might need. So things like Tylenol or ibuprofen, or any allergy medications, maybe.”

As for quantity, Jones encourages residents to plan ahead for several days.

“… I typically think about one to two weeks worth of your daily or chronic medication that you should have on hand. And it’s good to know that a lot of insurance companies will let you fill most medications a little bit early, especially when we’re talking about going into a storm, or even coming out of a storm. So there’s some help there,” Jones explained.

For some medications its required to store them in a certain temperature range. The information about the temperatures at which your medication should be stored can typically be found on the packaging.
