Panthers star rookie goes viral after sharing bizarre food preference
Xavier Legette’s food choice left fellow NFL players stunned
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Carolina Panthers star rookie Xavier Legette has gone viral once again, this time for a bizarre food choice.
Talking through his thick South Carolina accent, he said on the “St. Brown Podcast” that one of the foods he enjoys most is raccoon, leaving fellow NFL receivers Amon-Ra and Equanimeous St. Brown stunned.
“I eat raccoon,” Legette told the brothers.
“You what?” Equanimeous asked, looking completely puzzled.
“Like a raccoon you see in the trash can,” Legette said, reassuring the podcast hosts of what they heard. “I hunt it. I kill it. I skin ‘em. Cook ‘em. Eat ‘em. All that.”
The Panthers’ rookie said the last time he had the “delicacy” was on Thanksgiving. He made mention of it after practice Thanksgiving morning as well, in a video recorded by teammate Robert Hunt.
When the St. Browns asked him what raccoon tasted like, that answer was as interesting as the preference itself.
“It’s got its own taste,” Legette said on the podcast. “Everybody tries to stay stuff tastes like chicken. But raccoon got its own taste.”
In addition to eating raccoon, the 2024 first-round pick said he also eats squirrel and rabbit.
For someone who eats raccoon, the Panthers’ trip to Germany was understandably a culture shock to the 23-year-old from Mullins, S.C.
“Man, I’m going to tell you this,” Legette said when asked how he like the foreign country. “I ain’t never trying to go back…we went to a five-star steakhouse, man, and these folks didn’t even know what lemonade was.”
He also talked about his horse named “Dolla Bill” on the podcast, as well as the resurgence of Bryce Young.
Judging by his country accent and affinity for rodents, perhaps there was no better landing place for Legette than the Panthers. Bank of America Stadium is about two and a half hours from Mullins, and is by far the closest NFL stadium.
Through Carolina’s first 13 games this season, Legette leads the team in receiving yards and touchdowns.
He will have an opportunity to make up for last week’s potential game-winning touchdown drop when the Panthers host the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. For the first time since 2022, the seemingly re-energized Panthers are favored to win.
Kickoff for Sunday’s game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
