FLORENCE, S.C. (WMBF) – Two people in Florence are facing charges after police say their dog killed a woman during a recent attack.

The Florence Police Department said Justin Conroy and Ashley Maclean are each charged with owning a dangerous animal. Police added that Conroy and Maclean were arrested Wednesday morning and are being booked into the Florence County Detention Center.

A bond hearing will also be held Wednesday.

Authorities said the dog, which was euthanized on Saturday, killed 71-year-old Karen Nelson while she was riding her bicycle through Brigadoone Lane on July 10.

According to arrest warrants for Conroy and Maclean, the dog broke free of its leash and collar device and knocked Nelson off her bike in the attack. The dog bit Nelson, causing multiple traumatic injuries, and she later died at a hospital.
