âOwe it all to herâ: Laneyâs Kilby Theiss-Dixon honors mom on the field after cancer battle
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - It was just days before Laney High Schoolâs first scrimmage of the 2025 football season when Kilby Theiss-Dixon got the news: his mom had passed away from cancer.
Jacqueline Theiss-Carr was just 42 years old. Kilby said she meant everything to him, helping in every facet of his life, including as a football player. For years, she drove him to practices and tournaments, helping him get to the point where he became a starting wide receiver for Laney.
âI owe it all to her, really,â Kilby said.
She attended every Laney game, usually the loudest fan in the crowd, yelling, âShow me what you gotâ during big plays. Before kickoff and key plays in games this season, Kilby says he hears his mom yelling those same words from the stands.
âI can still hear her sometimes when I play,â Kilby said. âIâm just trying to honor her as much as possible, and play as if she was there.â
In the spring, Kilby found out his mom had cancer. It looked like her condition was improving in the ensuing months, he said, but she passed away on Aug. 13.
Instead of taking a break from football, Kilby used it as an escape, and a way to honor his mom. He leaned on his teammates and coaches for support. Itâs a group of people he calls his âbrothers.â
âItâs not like having your mom there, but so many people have put their loving arms around him, he knows heâs truly loved,â Laney head coach Steve Brooks said.
Brooks said the character Kilby shows every day, a character instilled in him by his mother, has made him one of the teamâs true leaders. He knows how proud Jacqueline would be watching her son this season.
âWhen he says heâs playing for his mom, I think itâs every single rep, every single day, that heâs playing for her,â Brooks said. âYou wish you had 65 guys that are just like Kilby.â
Kilby says he wants to honor his mom every Friday night by playing well and helping his team win.
Through seven games, Laney sits 4-3, having won four of its last five games and looking to make a deep run in the state playoffs. Kilby has emerged as one of the teamâs top offensive weapons.
And any accomplishment, he says, comes back to the most important person in his life.
âMy mom did everything for me,â he said. âI love my mom. She was always there for me.â
