BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – Approximately 20,000-25,000 gallons of untreated wastewater were discharged Thursday, Feb. 1, following a line break in Brunswick County, according to a county announcement.
The discharge happened at 2902 Old Ocean Highway, near Bolivia, according to the release. Crews discovered the line break at around 2:20 p.m.
“Staff from Brunswick County Public Utilities investigated the site and determined the break was caused by an electrical contractor installing new utility poles. County staff isolated the force main at approximately 3:15 PM on February 1, 2024. A minimal amount of wastewater continued to discharge due to a leaking valve. Staff remediated this issue at 9:00 AM on February 2, 2024,” the county states.
As of 11:50 a.m. Friday, repairs are still ongoing. The untreated wastewater is believed to have reached the Lockwood Folly River.
“Downstream sampling and remediation of the affected site is ongoing,” the release states. “No action is required by the public at this time. Additional information will be provided if action is necessary.”
