CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Firefighters were called to a fire at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport on Thursday morning.
The Charlotte Fire Department said the fire broke out around 8:10 a.m. on Josh Birmingham Parkway.
Officials said the fire broke out in the old air traffic control tower and that four construction workers were briefly trapped, but were able to make it out on their own uninjured.
Photos and video from the airport show smoke billowing from the tower.
Firefighters were able to control the flames within 10 minutes. A second alarm was triggered for extra resources out of precaution.
Because the fire was in the old control tower, airport operations were not interrupted.
Investigators later determined the fire accidentally broke out in an elevator shaft during demolition. According to crews, molten slag from hot work fell down the shaft and landed on a pile of foam insulation.
No injuries were reported.
