NAGS HEAD, N.C. (WITN) – The Fourth of July weekend has started on a somber note in one Outer Banks town.
Nags Head authorities say an 18-year-old vacationer from Columbus, Ohio drowned this afternoon.
The town says just before 3:00 p.m. three swimmers were in distress near the Gull Street public beach access on South Virginia Dare Trail.
Two of the swimmers made it back to shore, with one being helped by a Nags Head lifeguard.
The third swimmer could not be found. A Nags Head police officer’s drone located the swimmer and they were brought ashore by lifeguards. That swimmer was pronounced dead upon arrival at The Outer Banks Hospital.
The National Weather Service says the area today had moderate rip current threats.
