Officials: Man charged after trying to run over deputy at Waffle House in Greenville

GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office said a man has been charged after trying to run over a deputy at a Waffle House overnight.

According to the sheriff’s office, dispatch received a 911 call around 1:07 a.m. in reference to a suspicious car in the Waffle House parking lot located on Roper Mountain Road. Upon arrival, the driver tried to run over the deputy to evade custody.

Officials said a chase began after deputies were able to relocate the suspect and his car, at which the suspect used his car to ram the deputy’s patrol car in another attempt to evade arrest.

Deputies said the chase continued until deputies forcibly stopped the suspect vehicle on Butler Road. The driver was arrested after a brief pursuit on foot and was taken to the Greenville County Detention Center.

The sheriff’s Office said the suspect initially used his brother’s name and date of birth as an alias. His correct identity is 42-year-old Nathan Tamaya Paul.

Officials said Paul is charged with attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, failure to stop, resisting arrest, driving under suspension and multiple drug trafficking charges.

The deputy involved in the initial incident sustained minor injuries.

Paul is expected to have a bond hearing at 2:30 p.m. on Monday.
