OAK ISLAND, N.C. (WECT) – The Town of Oak Island is asking for input from the community as it begins its search for a new town manager.
Last month, David Kelly announced that he plans to retire as town manager effective July 1.
In a newsletter on the town’s website, plans were announced for three public input sessions for residents, property owners, and business owners.
The meetings in the Council Chambers (second floor of Town Hall at 4601 E Oak Island Dr.) will be held:
Wednesday, Feb. 28
10 a.m.–11:30 a.m.
2 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
6 p.m.– 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, March 2
10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
1 p.m.– 2:30 p.m.
“These in-person sessions will be a guided exercise of specific questions, and will not be a formal meeting of the full Council,” the newsletter states.
Seating for each session will be limited to 80 participants.
“On behalf of the entirety of Council, the new Town Manager search is underway, and more information will be forthcoming about the process” Mayor Liz White states in the newsletter. “Receiving input from citizens, property owners, business owners, and staff as stakeholders of our Town is an important part of the Council’s work. After considering all input, Council will craft a profile for the skills, characteristics, education, and experience desired for the new Manager we will seek to hire.”
Kelly started with the Brunswick County Water Utilities Department in 1988, eventually moving to the town of Yaupon Beach in 1992. As chief building inspector and eventually public utility director for the town, he helped the towns of Yaupon Beach and Long Beach merge into the modern-day Town of Oak Island in the late 90s.
He stayed as public services director after the merger from then until 2017, when he was named town manager after the firing of Tim Holloman.
