BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – A firefighter was injured in a brush fire on Friday that closed a road near Maxwell Drive.

Officials confirmed a 19-acre fire started within E.F. Middleton Blvd, near the entrance to St. James Plantation. A firefighter fell in a hole during the response and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

All lanes of E.F. Middleton Blvd reopened Saturday morning, Oct. 26, as smoke from a brush fire has lifted and visibility improved.

Previously, all lanes were closed due to limited visibility, and traffic on and off the Island was being detoured to Long Beach Road and the G.V. Barbee Bridge.
