North Carolina officials report more Hurricane Helene-related deaths months after storm
Death toll up to 106
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services confirmed more deaths related to Hurricane Helene, five months after the storm devastated much of Western North Carolina.
By Feb. 7, the death toll had risen to 106 since the storm hit on Sept. 27, 2024.
Most of the deaths have come from Buncombe County, 43 so far. The most common cause of death attributed to the storm was drowning.

The most recent deaths, according to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, were related to complications from environmental exposure after a home was washed away in the flooding.
More than a million homes and businesses were without power and hundreds of roads in Western North Carolina were closed during the height of the storm.
