WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – Officials with New Hanover County Schools say this year’s theme is “Ready Set Learn” as they look forward to sharing their performance scores from last school year.
Tuesday, Aug. 27, marked the first day of school for students and staff in New Hanover County. The school system is also prepping to release its academic test scores for the year.
Last year, 18 schools exceeded the academic standard. However, five schools underperformed: Holly Shelter Middle, Myrle Grove Middle, Alderman Elementary, International School at Gregory, and Blair Elementary.
School officials say that this year, some of the schools that underperformed have shown growth.
“We are pumped and ready to bring ourselves to new heights of academics, we have our academic scores coming out this week,” said Interim Superintendent Dr. Christopher Barnes.
Barnes says they are looking forward to continuing the positive momentum.
“We are excited, we can not wait to get our students back. We have been waiting all summer to get them back in the buildings. The schools are ready, the teachers are ready, we can’t wait to have you guys back,” said Barnes.
