New Hanover County school board presented climate survey results

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – According to a survey of school teachers and staff presented to the board at the meeting, the climate inside New Hanover County Schools is not positive.

Board member Stephanie Walker presented the findings to her fellow board members of nearly two thousand staff members including questions submitted by the school board.

87% of certified teachers in the school system responded to the survey. Among the findings, two out of every three people said they do not feel supported by district leadership and nearly eight out of ten said they do not feel leaders are aware of what goes on in the classrooms.

Eight out of ten also said the school board is not in touch with the realities of what teachers and public schools face and 74 % said the board does not work to create a positive climate to attract and retain teachers.
