WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The New Hanover County Planning Board got over 2,500 public comments in response to its work to create guidance for the development of the western bank of the Cape Fear River.
The 11 parcels located between the Isabel Holmes Bridge and Cape Fear Memorial Bridge within New Hanover County are all privately owned except the Battleship North Carolina.
The proposal is planned to be added to the county’s current Comprehensive Plan. The initial proposal outlines a new type of place designation to re-designate the areas with guidelines for use, intensity, landscaping and other requirements, and it would articulate environmental constraints and figure out strategies related to development agreements and brownfields programs.
Following public comments collected last month, several details were added to the proposal. This includes a note that requirements for additional studies might be required for new buildings and a note that any buildings that are part of the National Register Historic District on the western bank should be on the lower end of the height requirements.
