WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The New Hanover County (NHC) commissioners on Oct. 21 approved a construction contract for the renovation of the NHC Stabilization and Re-entry (STAR) Center.
The center will be at 1605 Robin Hood Road and will be operated by Leading Into New Communities (LINC) and RHA Health. It will also be the only medical detox facility in the county, which has been without one since The Harbor closed three years ago.
According to the meeting agenda, the 14,000-square-foot facility will have 16 inpatient beds for non-hospital medical detox and a 2-bed transitional housing facility to help get people back on their feet.
“The architect, LS3P, developed plans to fully renovate the building to meet the needs of the facility occupants. Construction bids were received on October 3, 2024. The lowest responsible and responsive bidder was Thomas Construction Group with a bid of $4,284,000 which is well within the construction cost estimate for the project,” the meeting agenda states.
The county will not need to put any more money into the construction; funds were already allocated for it from the original property purchase, a state grant, and contributions from Trillium Health Resources and LINC.
