RALEIGH, N.C. (WECT) – The N.C. Department of Transportation is sharing data and seeking public input to find future solutions as the motor fuels tax is becoming less reliable as a funding source.
The fuels tax fund accounts for 43 percent of state revenues for the department, and it is becoming less reliable due to more fuel efficient vehicles and electric vehicles.
In response, the NCDOT is partnering with the Eastern Transportation Coalition to find sustainable, long-term funding options to support the demands of the state’s transportation needs.
A new website answers questions about the state’s transportation network, discusses potential funding alternatives and offers a calculator to let people see how gas tax costs compare with other options.
