RALEIGH, NC (WITN) – North Carolina residents will pay more when they now visit the Division of Motor Vehicles.
That’s because, as of today, fees are going up 19%.
State law requires the DMV to adjust its rates every four years.
The increases are based on a percentage change in the annual Consumer Price Index during the past four years.
To get your vehicle tags renewed the cost has jumped from $38.75 to $46.25 while a driver’s license renewal for 8 years will now cost you $44, compared to $36 last week. DMV communications manager Marty Homan explained that this year’s fee hike is more than double the increase seen four years ago, attributing it to rising costs.
“Last time the increase was about 8%. Now it’s a little over 19%,” Homan shared.
The increase is for about 90 licenses and registration-related fees. The complete list of processes and adjusted fees are found here.
