WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The NC Turnpike Authority on July 25 shared details about a text message-based scam that claims to represent tolling agencies and requests payment for unpaid tolls.
“The targeted phone numbers seem to be chosen at random and are not uniquely associated with an account or usage of toll roads,” a NCTA announcement states.
NC Quick Pass customers should remember that the NCTA will never request payment by text and that all links associated with NC Quick Pass will include ncquickpass.com or secure.ncquickpass.com.
If you receive this scam, known as a “smishing” scam, you can do the following, per the NCTA:
- “File a complaint with the IC3, www.ic3.gov, be sure to include:
- “The phone number from where the text originated.
- “The website listed within the text
- “Check your account using the toll service’s legitimate website.
- “Contact the toll service’s customer service phone number.
- “Delete any smishing texts received.
- “If you clicked any link or provided your information, take efforts to secure your personal information and financial accounts. Dispute any unfamiliar charges.”
If you’re concerned you are being targeted with a scam, you can reach out to the NCTA online.
