NC primary election results delayed statewide after voting hours extended in one county

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – North Carolina voters will have to wait longer than usual for unofficial election results on Tuesday, March 3, after the North Carolina Board of Elections extended voting hours at a Halifax County precinct.

The board voted unanimously to keep the Littleton precinct open until 8:30 p.m., one hour past the standard statewide closing time. State law prohibits the board from releasing any results while voting is underway in any contest, meaning no statewide unofficial results will be published until all polls have closed.

According to a state release, a synchronization issue with electronic poll books delayed the opening of the Littleton precinct on Tuesday morning. Backup procedures were not immediately employed.

State law allows the board to extend voting hours at sites where voting is interrupted for at least 15 minutes. The extension cannot exceed the length of the disruption and applies only to the affected site.

No results are expected to be posted until 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3.
