CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WECT) – North Carolina Poison Control is advising careful usage of GLP-1 drugs ahead of National Poison Prevention Week.
N.C. Poison Control reports getting an average of one to two calls a day about GLP-1 drugs, with 80% of the cases involving a mistake when administering the drug.
“People should be informed, not fearful, about GLP-1 medications,” Dr. Michael Beuhler, medical director of N.C. Poison Control, said. “Make sure you understand the dose and possible complications with your healthcare provider and clarify about how to measure and self-administer the medication to avoid an overdose.”
N.C. Poison Control provided the following tips to prevent a GLP-1 medication poisoning:
- Read the label carefully before administering the medication to ensure you are dosing the correct amount
- Know when to take the medication
- Don’t take more of the medicine than prescribed to fast-track results
- GLP-1 drugs aren’t interchangeable
