RALEIGH, N.C. (WECT) – The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) on Oct. 15 announced that its Division of Water Resources had established interim limits for eight per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in groundwater.
Per the NCDEQ, the division was asked to establish interim maximum allowable concentrations (IMACs) on July 22, and the division director has decided the IMACs will protect public health.
The limits have been established for:
- Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS)
- Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA)
- Hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (HFPO-DA or GenX)
- Perfluorobutane sulfonic acid (PFBS)
- Perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA)
- Perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS)
- Perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA)
- Perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA)
These can be used to set groundwater cleanup targets by the NCDEQ Division of Waste Management, and the director will make a recommendation to the Environmental Management Commission in the next 12 months to decide if the limits should be replaced by a new standard or expire.
The full memorandum is available on the NCDEQ website.
