MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – A seven-month-old puppy in Myrtle Beach overdosed and had to be brought back with Narcan after it ate heroin allegedly left out on a table.

Myrtle Beach police were called on May 27 to one of the city’s fire stations on the 2100 block of South Kings Highway for animal cruelty and neglect.

Once police arrived, they saw firefighters giving Narcan to a 15-pound Chihuahua mix that had eaten about a gram of heroin. A home health aid visiting near the dog owners’ home brought it to the station.

After the full nasal dose, the puppy, Sophie, was revived and taken to an animal hospital for more care.

Shane Harris, 39, was also at the station and claimed ownership of the dog. He then told police post-Miranda that a man came into his home at 2600 South Ocean Boulevard and left the drug on the table, which the dog ate, a police report states.

Police then searched that home and found a drug-filled syringe in a purse in the bathroom.

Serrena Young, 38, the dog’s other owner, admitted to police that the syringe was hers, according to the report.

Both Young and Harris are charged with abandonment of animals, with Young also facing a drug charge.

Harris posted bail last week, and Young is still booked at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center.

Meanwhile, the city of Myrtle Beach stated in a Facebook post Sophie is now ”receiving the care and love she deserves.”

The city also said she would be up for adoption at the conclusion of the criminal investigation.
