NEW HANOVER COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – A man was arrested last week on charges of negligent child abuse and fleeing arrest following a chase involving law enforcement in New Hanover County, per his arrest warrant and court documents.
The warrant claims 33-year-old Kourtnie Brice James on Aug. 9 fled an attempted traffic stop near 3127 Education Loop, next to the CFCC North Campus. The warrant claims he was being pulled over because of a suspected breaking and entering case.
It then claims he fled at speeds over 80 miles per hour in the rain with his daughter in the car, who was allegedly under the age of 12. He is also accused of giving a fake name to law enforcement and misusing the 911 system by calling 911 to claim he was being harassed by police.
The warrant indicates he was charged with:
- Felony flee/elude arrest with a motor vehicle
- Felony negligent child abuse-serious physical injury
- Misdemeanor driving without a license/registration not impaired
- Misdemeanor resisting a public officer
- Misdemeanor reckless driving-wanton disregard
- Misdemeanor fictitious info to officer
- Misdemeanor misuse of 911 system
- Two infractions for failure to stop at a red light.
His vehicle was also impounded by law enforcement following his arrest. The sheriff’s office website indicates he is being held under a $17,000 secured bond for charges in this case, along with a separate $1,000 secured bond for possession of <1/2 oz of marijuana and a $4,000 bond for failure to appear on a misdemeanor from another agency.
